The star has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 honor prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to save the UK's independent music venues.

Fender was presented with the award on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the best record of the previous year.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues played in his beginning days.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the shows I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Fender also took part, raising over £100k on his live tour to help thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The money assisted locations that were facing possible closure due to difficulties caused by floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that helped musicians and fans.

"The idea that money from shows in large arenas supports the local stages, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

The musician is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

When they received the prize in the mid-90s for their release their work, lead singer the singer declared that the band would donate their cash to the non-profit the charity.

That year, rapper and singer the artist shared her prize among several good causes, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also donated a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

Two years ago, they contributed their winnings to the youth organization that developed their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Also the 1994 recipients M People contributed their prize to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Winning was sufficient," said vocalist the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success touched another person's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected several local spots in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in the city and the other in that location were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
