Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
