Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
