EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
