British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
