A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
